LeRoy Welbig, 90, of Dell Rapids passed away on Saturday, November 3, 2018 at the Dells Nursing and Rehab Center in Dell Rapids. His Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, November 8, 2018 in St. Mary Catholic Church. Visitation on Wednesday will be in St. Mary Catholic Church at 5:00 p.m with the family present from 5:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. A Rosary will be prayed at 7:00 p.m. followed by the Christian Wake Service.
LeRoy Joseph Welbig was born on January 5, 1928 at Dell Rapids, SD, the son of Jacob and Frances (Entringer) Welbig. He grew up in Dell Rapids and attended Noise Country School District #58. After school he started working on the family farm and at Lacey’s potato factory. He married Ruth Nelson on October 5, 1949 at St. Mary Catholic Church in Dell Rapids. The couple made their home in Dell Rapids. LeRoy started working for the City of Dell Rapids and then was the landfill supervisor where he worked for over 30 years. He was then a custodian for the Dell Rapids School District until his retirement. Ruth passed away on January 2, 2018.
He enjoyed baseball and basketball and attended many amateur baseball games. He loved the Minnesota Twins and the Minnesota Timberwolves. He was able to complete his bucket list by attending two Twins games this past summer thanks to Mark and Maggie Welbig. He liked to do crossword puzzles and rodeos and loved to travel on bus to Canada, Nashville and Branson.
LeRoy is preceded in death by his parents, three sisters, five brothers, his son, Ken and his wife, Ruth.
He is survived by his 13 children, Linda Peyton of Dell Rapids, Denny (Janice) Welbig of Brookings, Diane (Dennis) Martinson of Dell Rapids, Tom (Pat) Welbig of Harrisburg, Ed (Bonnie) Welbig of Dell Rapids, Terry (Deb) Welbig of Dell Rapids, Calvin (Jane) Welbig of Sioux Falls, Nancy Kasemodel of Prosper, TX, Mary (Lane) Busser of Colton, Sheila Welbig (Verlyn Wiertzema) of Sioux Falls, Susan (Brit) Smith of Sioux Falls, Becky (Ray) Doughan of West Des Moines, IA and Jeff (Tracy) Welbig of Dell Rapids; his 37 grandchildren, 49 great-grandchildren; his sisters, Regina Evans and Agnes Ginsbach both of Dell Rapids and his extended family and many friends.
