Edwin J. Burkard died peacefully at home surrounded by his family on March 5, 2007.

He was born on March 2, 1915 in Dell Rapids, SD. He married Helen Slinger on July 12, 1944. They resided on the family farm until their retirement to Green Bay in 1981. Ed had a second career as a crossing guard in Green Bay for 21 years, retiring at age 86.

He is survived by his wife, Helen of 62 years and 4 children, Merlyn (Linda Benaszeski) Algoma, WI, Audrey Alwan (Hamid) Shorewood, WI, Barbara Burkard, Whitefish Bay, WI, Roger Burkard (Karen) Spearfish, SD and 4 grandchildren, Gretchen Vitamvas, Brooklyn, NY, Eric Plantenberg (Michelle), Aaron Plantenberg, Bryson City, NC, and Zosia Burkard, Lismore, Australia, brother Alfred (Arlene) Colman, SD, sister Stella Bunkers (Yvo) Dell Rapids, SD.

His funeral service will begin at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, March 8, 2007 at Kahler Funeral Home. Interment will be in the St. Mary Cemetery, Dell Rapids.Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 7, 2007 at the funeral home.
