The first tradition of every July 4 for us Nelson boys was the setting off of fireworks outside of Merle and Eloise's house as early as we could get morning chores done (and sometimes it was before chores). Sometimes we just laughed outside, and many times we got invited in for a morning snack! Most of us boys got our first employment mowing grass for them and some of us older boys were fortunate enough to help with some farming. My standout moment was a very cold and very snowy evening of moving snow east of their farm. Merle's car had gotten stuck and I worked for several hours trying to get to it. I got so cold that when I stopped back at their home, they had to help me inside. Eloise made warm towels and Merle rubbed the circulation back into me. They were such wonderful role models for us kids living just down the road and we just loved being part of their lives, and loved having them be part of ours. I know that Ellie has already taken a place near God's right hand and that she, along with Merle, will keep close watch out on us and for us. Thanks be to God for such a wonderful person.
