Francis “Frank” Coomes, 96, passed away on Friday, June 19, 2026 at Avera Sacred Heart in Yankton. His Memorial Mass will begin at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, June 26, 2026 at St. Joseph the Workman Catholic Church at Huntimer. Visitation will be one hour prior to the start of the service.
Francis “Frank” W. Coomes was born on September 18, 1929 near Colton, SD, the son of Felix and Margaret (Flanagan) Coomes. He grew up on the family farm and attended country school and then Chester High School for two years. He enlisted in the US Marines and served in the Korean War. After his discharge he went to work for F and M Coop in Madison from 1957-1961. Frank married Charlene Muller in 1961. They made their home in Madison until they moved to their farm.
Frank was a member of the Chester American Legion Post and St. Joseph the Workman Catholic Church
He is preceded in death by his parents, four sisters, his wife and two brothers-in-law.
He is survived by his daughters, Julia (George) Vansco of Spearfish, Lori (Randy) Brunick of Sioux Falls and BJ Wylie of Sioux Falls; his 4 grandchildren; his 4 great-grandchildren; his brother, Ed (Lois) Coomes of Colton and his sister, Helen Mancuso of Huntsville, TX.
