James “Jim” Hallem, 88, of Dell Rapids, passed away on Monday, August 5, 2024 at his home. His funeral service will begin at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, August 12, 2024 at Kahler-Brende Funeral Home. Visitation will be one hour prior to the start of the service. Interment will be in the West Nidaros Cemetery.
James was born on August 27, 1935 at Dell Rapids, SD, the son of Raymond and Clara (Opoien) Hallem. He grew up in Dell Rapids until moving with the Dregseth family to a farm near Lyons. He attended school in Lyons and graduated from Lyons High School. He then attended Augustana College before enlisting in the US Navy. After his discharge he moved back to the area where he worked for the Sioux Falls Police Department for a short time and the Dell Rapids Police Department. He then started a restaurant in the Parks Service Station. He then did various security jobs around Sioux Falls including at the Sioux Falls airport until doing appliance repairs. He was well known for selling Oysters around the holidays.
He was a member of the VFW and the Dell Rapids Legion.
James is preceded in death by his parents, infant brothers, Clarence and Stanley and brothers, Marvin, his twin Roy, Derald, and Jerry and a brother-in-law, Larry Tommeraasen.
Grateful for having shared his life are his siblings, Donald (Janis) Hallem of Las Cruces, NM and Carol Tommeraasen of Baltic, and his numerous nieces and nephews and his extended family.
