Obituary

James A. Weiland, 82, of rural Dell Rapids passed away July 13, 2023 while on vacation with his family in Lead, SD. His Memorial Mass will begin at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, July 20, 2023 at St. Mary Catholic Church, Dell Rapids. Visitation with the family present will be on Wednesday, July 19, 2023 from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. with the wake beginning at 7:00 p.m. at Kahler-Brende Funeral Home. A family rosary will be prayed following the wake service.

Jim was born October 6,1940 the second son of Andrew and Borghild (Evenson) Weiland. He grew up with his 6 siblings on the family farm northwest of Dell Rapids. Jim attended St. Mary Catholic School and graduated in 1960 and decided to enlist in the Navy, where he served in the Pacific.  After returning to South Dakota, he worked a few jobs before returning to the farm full time where he worked for the rest of his life.  During this time, Jim was united in marriage with Nancy (Scholten) Weiland on November 10, 1973 at St. Mary’s in Larchwood, IA.  They had three children. Jim dedicated his life to farming and raising his family on the farm, instilling in his children his very strong work ethic.

Jim enjoyed chewing the fat with any and everyone that came on to the farm. Whether it was a salesman, neighbor, old family friend or his kids’ friends he would talk about any and all subjects. If you have ever talked to Jim, it is a very good possibility that you may have heard, “It is what it is, you know what I mean?”, “Here’s the deal…”, or “You know, what a guy shoulda done…” or “Now let me tell ya…” Conversations with his brother at Christmas time could be heard throughout the house and made their grandchildren giggle. Affectionately, he referred to his grandchildren as either, “Toots” or “Bucky”.

Jim also enjoyed nature. From hunting in his younger days, to bird watching and most recently being entertained by a doe and her fawns playing in his backyard, he really enjoyed wildlife and the beauty of Mother Nature.

Jim really had a passion for finding a bargain. He knew the “good”  pawn shops in the area and would often come home with treasures, bragging about the good deal he got. He has quite a collection of tools and miscellaneous items, such as free farm hats, coats and gloves adorned with his “J.A.W.” brand in sharpie. Many of his more precious items received the “Hands Off” mark, just so everyone would know that it was “Mah-own” (My own).

Survivors include his wife, Nancy,  Dell Rapids, SD;children:  Matthew and Sonya (Darland) Weiland, Dell Rapids,SD; Julie (Weiland) Iferd Fairfield, PA.; grandchildren: Bergen Weiland, Madison, SD, Andrew, Lane and Grace Weiland, Dell Rapids, SD.  Luke and Elizabeth Iferd, Fairfield, PA. Siblings David (Sharon) Weiland, and John Weiland, Dell Rapids, SD; Linda (Lynn) Schwebach, Greenville, SC; Daniel (Karen) Weiland, Brainard, MN and sister-in-law Charlotte Weiland, Dell Rapids, SD and many other relatives.
