Jim was born to Bernard and Ardath (Gough) Nelson of Dell Rapids, SD on April 2, 1959. Jim spent his childhood school years attending the School for the Blind in Aberdeen. He spent many summers selling produce from his family’s home in Dell Rapids and was proud of the work he did there. He also possessed a great memory of 1960’s rock bands, along with the names of every cat the family had throughout the years.
After a brief time in Sioux Falls, Jim moved to Rapid City, where he truly found his home. He resided at the Sitka House and was a dedicated member of the Black Hills Works team. Jim loved his work and the people he met there, fostering many friendships. One of the most joyful chapters of Jim’s life was his relationship with Connie Whitley. On August 13, 2014, former Mayor Sam Kooiker officiated a commitment ceremony for the couple. In a touching tribute to their bond, the Mayor dedicated August 13 as "Jim & Connie Day" and presented them with the keys to the city.
Jim is survived by his siblings: Gary (Nancy) of Romeoville, IL; Bonnie (John) Edge of Mandeville, LA; and Doug (Sue) Nelson of Canyon Lake, TX. He is also remembered by his nieces and nephews: Cheryl (Mohsin), Karla, Cody (Andrea), Greg (Meagan), Austin (Alexis), two great-nephews and one-great niece. He was preceded in death by his parents, Bernard and Ardath Nelson, and Connie Whitley.
The family request that memorials be directed to the Sitka House or Black Hills Works.
